When you make your resume, keep in mind a few important things such as the way you write your content, what you write and the format you write it in.
Here we will discuss key factors to remember when writing your resume.
Let’s talk about formatting your resume first. The main things to consider are the readability, grammar & vocabulary and a relevant format/design for it. And then we will talk about the content you should add, the most important content is your education, work experiences, skills and achievements.
Readability.
Designing your resume can be challenging, keep in mind that whatever design you choose, it should be readable. Your font, font size, spacing, and alignment should all be accurate and clean. It has to be pleasant to look at and read. The font size shouldn’t be too big or too small and you shouldn’t make it look cluttered. This is important when an employer is reading your resume, nobody would want to read a resume where the font is a bad choice or too small that you cannot read it.
Grammar, Vocabulary & Punctuation.
The word you choose to use has a big impact on how the employer will view your resume. Repetition of words or misspellings can let the viewer think you have a low vocabulary and cannot even spell correctly, leading to a bad image. Your choice of vocabulary can either be good or bad, if you choose well, good English skills are always a good thing to show. Being grammatically correct and using punctuation marks correctly show your eye for detail and sense of language. Language is a very important factor to consider and must always be prioritised when you write your resume.
Relevant Format/Design
The design you choose for your resume is also important. An eye-catching, aesthetic and clean-looking resume would be more attractive to an employer than someone who has written plain words on a sheet with no real organisation or format. For every job role, there would be a different design you can follow. An engineer might have a cleaner design with lines breaking the page apart for the content but a graphic designer might have a more design-friendly approach and might add a design element to their resume. Each resume can be unique, but always keep in mind not to use too bold colours or clutter the resume with too much information or content.
Education
Talking about content to add to your resume, you must always add your education and any other qualifications. Your education is very important so that the employer knows what background you come from and whether or not it is relevant to the current job profile at hand. It also allows you to show your degrees and any other courses you have done. This lets the employer gain a better understanding of your past studies and interests.
Work Experience
The most important part of one’s resume is work experience. When writing about your previous work experiences, keep in mind that you should not only write the job titles but a brief about the work you did so the employer understands what work you’re familiar with. A small brief of your learnings or key responsibilities during the previous job can provide the employer with extra insight into your work which is very important when you hire someone. But again, write only the relevant parts of your previous jobs, there’s no need to write details that will not be of importance.
Skills
Skills are also a good thing to write on your resume because it shows your employer your strengths and what skills you’re good at. Strengths can be anything from your expertise in ‘Adobe Photoshop’ or even your ‘Content Writing’ skills. Of course, you should write all that you are confident in doing but keep in mind not to write too many also. Mention a few top skills ranging from maybe 3 to 7 skills but not many more.
Achievements
Personal work achievement stories are sometimes what give you the job. Talking about big or small accomplishments in your career help make yourself stand out more than usual. Even if you mention a small promotion from intern to executive, the completion of a project within a timeline or the success of one of your ideas. They can all help your employer have a deeper insight into your personality and goals. Achievements also show your capability to do certain tasks or complete certain goals, which every employer wants in a good candidate.
